Biography

Fredrick was employed as a shepherd for Mr A Wilkie of Raetahi. At age 31, he enlisted, WWI, rank private, service no 11/2350. He embarked with the NZEF, Wellington Mounted Rifles, B Squadron in March 1916, disembarking at Suez. Fredrick was posted to 2nd Infantry and boarded the Ivernia ? bound for France where he joined the NZ Division in the field at Etaples.

He was then posted with the Pioneer Battalion.

Just 4 months later, Fredrick became a casualty of gas shelling. He was hospitalised and eventually ended up in No 2 Australian General at Bologne , later being transferred to 2nd London General.

It was May 1917 at 3rd NZ General that Fredrick was declared unfit for further duty and subsequently returned to New Zealand on the ship Tofua to Devonport, Auckland.

Post war, Fredrick worked on the land. He married in 1924 at Blenheim to Milfred Gifford. They settled at Rangataua in the Bay of Plenty and in the late 1940's at Ngaruawahia in the Waikato.

Fredrick Nicol died in 1962 and is buried at Ngaruawahia Cemetery.
