Biography

"Nov 29th William Nicol mophead and Janet Mitchell his wife had a daur lawfully begotten named Rachel witt Robt Smelie & Willia Christie.."[1]

There are three entries which all seem to represent her marriage to John Mutch. One of them seems to contradict her father's name as per her birth record.

"John Mutch Blacksmith Blackfriars Street, parish of St. Nicholas & Rachel Nicol Bon-Accord Street in this parish, signified their purposes of marriage, by Wm. Jas Reid, Elder & being thrice proclaimed, they were married on the 13th June 1839 by the Rev'd John Allan Minr. of Union Parish."[2]

"After due proclamation of banns, John Mutch, Jnm. Blacksmith in Aberdeen was, on the Thirteenth day of June, One Thousand eight hundred and thirty nine Married at Aberdeen to Rachel, daughter of the late John Nicol, Labourer in the Parish of Banchory Devenick _ by the Reverend John Allan, Minister of Union Parish in prescence of these witnesses _ Robert Mutch, and John Mutch - both Blacksmiths in Aberdeen."[3]

A third is only represented in ScotlandsPeople as an index entry: "NICOL RACHEL JOHN/AUTCH FRMR7-44P98 13/06/1839 168/N 440 0 North Church Aberdeen".

Sufficient evidence, including her siblings' births (James in 1814 and Mary in 1811) convinces us her father's Christian name was William. It seems the marriage itself probably took places at the North Church (which has since been converted the Aberdeen Arts Centre).

The had four children.[4][5]

Rachel lived in Scotland until at least 1871,[6] but must have removed not long after to Cleveland, Ohio, United States, where her son William lived, and where she died in 1876.[7]
