Biography

Jasper Hume D.D. b. 17.10.1818 St Peter Port, Guernsey Most of his schooldays were spent in Canada. His schoolmasters were Dr Twining in Halifax and Mr Burrage in Quebec. He excelled in athletic sports and in venturesome and daring feats by flood and field. He wanted to enter the army like his brothers, but his parents wanted him to join the sacred ministry, and he bowed to their will.

Matric 2.6.1836 aged 17; He entered Oriel College, Oxford in 1836 and graduated with BA honours in classics and philosophy in 1840; MA 1843; DD 1856; Michel Fellow of Queen's College 1843-8; DD 1856. From 1845-57 he was Principal and Professor of Divinity at Bishop's College, Lennoxville Lower Canada. In 1857 he exchanged his Professorship of Divinity for that of classics which he held for the remainder of his life.

In 1865 in view of financial difficulties, it was found necessary to reduce the College staff and Dr. Nicolls was forced to take charge of the Divinity which he continued to teach till 1873, when the Professorships, which had been in abeyance, were restored, he resumed the classics.

During these years Bishops College grew under his hands from a Theological School to a University under Royal Charter and with faculties of Divinity, Arts and Medicine. The buildings too grew from the simple square brick house which was the first College to the present (abt. 1895) elaborate range of handsome buildings. Among these, the chapel was Dr. Nicolls' own proper erection which he built it in 1853.

The printed version was transcribed in 2002 to computer by Alistair Gordon, who inherited copy No.8, together with the contents of the booklet of Nicolls biographies also authored by Oliver C.C. Nicolls.
