WILLIAM NIGHTINGALE, born probably in England, is first of record in America when his son Samuel was born at Braintree 1670. He was born about 1637 and died at Braintree (Quincy) May 10, 1714 aged about 77 years, says his gravestone in Hancock Cemetery (May 18th town record).
He married about 1669 Bethiah Deering, born Aug. 6, 1649, died Sep. 24, 1688 in child birth, daughter of Samuel & Bethiah (Baxter) Deering. Bethiah Deering was given £10 in the will of her grandfather Gregory Baxter in 1659. Her father Samuel Deering died in 1671 and his widow Mary (Newcomb) Deering in 1674 was ordered not to alienate any of his estate, and made an account to the court and ordered to pay 20 schillings each to the seven youngest children at age, "the eldest having had her portion already", this being Bethiah (Deering) Nightingale.
The Nightingale homestead was located in present West Quincy near Granite and Center Sts, and part of it to this day (1950) remains in the hands of his lineal descendants. He received the homestead as a gift from John Baxter Sr, dated Sep. 26, 1695 who "for owers good causes, and in especial out of tender respect and brotherly love and affection towards my deceased sister Bethiah Deering, and out of tender love and respect to her daughter Bethiah Nightingale, as also her offspring, William Nightingale, John Nightingale, Joseph Nightingale, Ebenezer Nightingale, Daniel Nightingale, and Bethiah Nightingale have given . 10 acres land, Joseph to have double share. The same hath been in the improvement and enjoyment of William Nightingale Sr. for some time, but never legally conveyed to him, etc, a part of which he hath built upon, and planted trees upon", etc. --- their father William Nightingale to enjoy the same during life: (S. D. 17:187).
He is first mentioned in town records as a petitioner defending claims of Braintree men against Boston claims for certain lands in Braintree, Jan 10, 1697/8.
Bethiah wife of William Nightingale joined the Church and was baptized Sep. 13, 1674.

I was delighted to read your profile on William Nightingale, my 7th great grandfather. I am a descendant of Daniel Nightingale (1780-1855) who left New England and pioneered in Michigan in the 1840's. I was able to trace the Nightingale family lineage back to Braintree about three years ago. Without the use of computer data searches, our family had been unable to trace our Nightingale back beyond Daniel. I made my first trip to New England in October and visited the Braintree Historical Society to research the Nightingales and visited the Hancock Cemetery. I have a FaceBook group that I post genealogy information for 65 of our cousins.
I have been active on Ancestry for a number of years and not familiar with WikiTree. I will need to explore and check it out.
