Biography

John Daniel Nix is born on November 11, 1859, in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales, Australia, the son of Thomas Nix (1820-1909) and Elizabeth Curtis (1837-1872) [1][2][3]. His father, Thomas, had arrived in Australia from England in 1853. His mother, Elizabeth, was born in 1837 in Essex, England.

Raymond Terrace is about 25 kilometres to the northwest of Newcastle. Sometime in the 1860s, the family moves to a farm in Mill Creek which is just north of Stroud. Stroud is 75 kilometres by road north of Newcastle. This is where John Daniel grows up.

On April 22, 1885, John marries Laura Emily Ward (1858-1911) in Paddington [1][2][4]. Paddington is about 160 kilometres to the south of Newcastle (it is now a suburb of Sydney).

John and Laura have six children:

• John Nix 1886-1886

• Ashely Edwin Nix 1887-1955 + (1914) Ruth Elizabeth Leah Palmer 1885-1969

• Norman Onslow Nix 1892-1972 + (1915) Alice Sarah Burns 1895-1956

• Herbert B. Nix 1896-1896

• Louise Isabel Nix 1899-1960 + (1935) Robert James Brown 1900-1972

• William Henry Nix 1902-1942

All the children are born in the Sydney area.

Laura dies on November 6, 1911, and John dies on September 8, 1918, in Chatswood [1][5]. Chatswood is a suburb of Sydney. New South Wales [1][5]. John and Laura are buried together in Gore Hill Cemetery in St. Leonards, a suburb of Sydney [6].
