Henry Jarrett Nix is born on May 3, 1886, in Minmi, New South Wales, Australia, the son of George Thomas Nix (1850-1914) and Elizabeth Jarrett (1851-1930) [1][2][3][4]. Minmi is just outside of Newcastle and in the later 19th Century it was an important coal-mining town. His father may have a job associated with the coal mine but, and whatever his job, he moves the family north to Queensland at some point.
On October 12, 1908, Henry marries Alice Mary Parsons (1887-1974) in Charters Towers, Queensland [1][2][3][5]. Charters Towers is a gold mining town so it may be that Henry had some job associated with mining. Henry and Alice are living in Bundaberg, Queensland by the time of the First World War. Bundaberg is approximately 385 kilometres north of Brisbane. Henry’s widowed mother also lives in Bundaberg.
The couple has five children:
• George Francis Nix 1909-1950 + (1931) Patricia Caroline Hughes 1907-?
• Henry James Nix 1910-? + (1935) Mabel Constance Richardson 1913-?
• Alison Elizabeth Nix 1912-1945 + (1) (1936) Harvey Brydon Wills c1911-1939 + (2) (1941) Angus George Peiniger 1907-1993
• Ralph John (“Jack”) Nix 1914-2007 + (1940) Dorothy Mavis (“Dockie”) Robson 1919-2006
• Grace Isabela Nix 1918-2009 + (1942) Vilna Rudolf Nielson 1914-1986
On February 11, 1918, Henry enlists in the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant [. He had served in the Army prior to this. On March 2, 1918. he sails from Sydney for Europe. His three brothers also serve with the Army in Europe during the First World War. One, John Edward Nix, is killed in action in France.
Henry dies in Brisbane in 1937 [7]. He is either buried in the Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane or in Bridgeman Downs, Brisbane [8][9]. The first gravesite at Toowong refers to him as “Harry.” The second, at Bridgeman Downs, names him “Henry.” Alice Mary dies in March 1974, and she is buried in Cairns.
