Biography

George Francis Nix is born February 21, 1909 in Queensland, Australia. His parents are Henry Jarrett Nix (1886-1937) and Alice Mary Parsons (1887-1974).

On December 15, 1931 George marries Patricia Caroline Hughes (1907-?). They have five children:

  • Marcia Nix
  • Julie Nix
  • John Nix
  • Marilyn Nix
  • David Nix

At some point George Francis Nix becomes a school teacher at the Cairns State School. He has an interest in orchids and belongs to the Cairns Orchid Society. On December 20, 1950 he sets out with two other people looking for orchids in the mountains near Bambaroo, which is 263 kilometres south of Cairns. During the expedition a large rock falls on him and kills him.

He is buried in the Cairns Cemetery and the inscription on his grave indicates he had military experience (he was a staff sergeant presumably in the Australian Army)

[4] The Courier-Mail (Brisbane, Queensland), Thu 21 Dec 1950, pg 1: “Cairns, Wednesday – A boulder weighing more than three tons crushed 42 year-old Cairns State school teacher George Nix to death to-day. Nix was a member of a three-man party searching for orchids in rough mountainous country near Bambaroo, about 18 miles from Ingnam. The wild nature of the country prevented police carrying his body back to Bambaroo to-day. A large party will carry his body back to-morrow. Nix, who was a prominent member of the Cairns Orchid Society, was spending his vacation with his wife at the home of the Bambaroo State School headteacher, Mr. O'Brien. At midday he set out with Mr. O'Brien and Mr. O'Brien's brother-in-law to search for orchids in the nearby Mountains. PINNED IN A CREVICE His death occured at 2pm at little known Waterfall Creek, which is set deep in the mountains, four miles from Bambaroo. . The boulder knocked him into a steep crevice, crushing his chest and the lower part of his body. Mr. O'Brien walked four miles back through dense undergroth to Bambaroo to telephone the Ingham police and ambulance, leaving his brother-in-law to extricate Nix from the crevice. Police, ambulance and Bambaroo residents reached the crevice two hours later, and tried to hack a path through the undergrowth to carry Nix's body to Bambaroo. They had gone only half a mile when darkness and the density of the undergrowth forced them to stop for the night.”
