Marmaduke was the third child of Henry Nixon and Elizabeth Browne, he was born in Malta on 27th April 1813.[1]
He was commissioned in 1831 as an Ensign in the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot and went to India.
He was a Major in the 39th Regiment and sold out to come to Auckland.
He emigrated to New Zealand in 1852 on board the 'Cresswell'.
He was an Otahuhu settler and the Franklin Member of Parliament before commanding the Colonial Defence Force Cavalry during the Waikato War (1863-4). He suffered a wound at the Battle of Rangiaowhia and died a few months later.[2]
Colonel Nixon was unmarried.
