Obituary (from Bev Bauser - IL Gen Web)
John Nixon, 79, retired glassblower and former night captain of police, died unexpectedly at 3:16 a.m. today at his home, 930 Hawley. He had complained of a chest pain Monday, but had been up, and Monday evening had gone for a walk in the neighborhood. After returning home he had made plans to attend the funeral today of an old friend and former glassblower, John Dahlstrom. He suffered the fatal attack of illness about 2:50 a.m. He awakened his wife and asked her to get an anacin tablet for him. Soon after he had taken the tablet, he lapsed into a coma and died before a physician could be summoned.
Active for his advanced years, Mr. Nixon had insisted in keeping himself busy with light tasks about his home. Recently his eyesight had begun to fail, but he was reluctant to discuss the affliction with anyone and would not even admit to members of his family that his eyesight was failing.
Mr. Nixon was born Nov. 5, 1867, in Pittsburg, Pa., where he resided until the age of 19 and learned the glass blowing trade. He came to Alton from Pittsburgh and worked at his trade of glass blower at Illinois Glass Co., predecessor of Owens-Illinois Glass Co. He had also worked as glass blower in Chicago Heights, and while residing there had affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He served as night captain of police during an administration of the late former Mayor Edmond H. Beall.
His first wife died in 1936 and following her death he was married to Mrs. Katherine Whittles, who survives him. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. A. M. Whittenbrink, Belleville, and son, William, of Alton; two step-children, Mrs. Clyde Belcher and Mrs. Harry Spangiol, Alton; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Streeper funeral home by the Rev. O. F. Whitlock, pastor of First Methodist church. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. today.
