Harriet was born in Hastings, Sussex in about 1804.
She married Thomas Elphick on 30 April 1827 in Hollington, Sussex. The register shows Thomas as a bachelor of Battle, Sussex. [1]
The 1841 census shows the family living in Smiths Row, All Saints, Hastings, where Thomas, age 36 is a shoemaker, Harriett is age 37, of their 9 children, Ruth is the eldest, age 14, followed by Mary, William, Albion, Kezia, James, Caroline, Ann and Eliza [2]
By the time the 1851 census was taken, Thomas had become a master shoemaker. The family was living at 9, Norman Road East, Hastings, Sussex, and consisted of parents Thomas and Harriett, both age 46, and children William 19 a shoemaker, Thomas 17 a poulterer, Kezia age 16, Caroline age 13, Ann age 11, James age 15 a shoemakers apprentice, Eliza age 9, John age 8, Cornelius age 6 and Harriett age 4 [3]
