James was the fifth child of Edward and Mary Eustace Nolan, born in Cunaberry Townland, Ballon Parish, County Carlow, Ireland.[1][2] James' four older siblings were born in Ballykealey townland. James emigrated from Ireland to Ontario with his family when he was about 3-4 years old, according to an interview his older brother Laughlin gave many years later.[3]
The family settled in Douro township in Peterborough County, and James grew to adulthood there. James father died before 1852, and his two older brothers, Martin and Patrick had started their own farms by that time. James, Laughlin, and their two younger brothers were farming the original homestead with their widowed mother and younger sister.[4]
James married Ellen Burk about this time. Ellen had been living in the home of James' brother Martin and his wife.[5] She may have been related to James' brother Patrick's wife Mary.
James and Ellen were the parents of two children before James' early death at age 23. He is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Douro Ontario.[6]
