Ellen was the youngest of eleven children in the family of Martin and Margaret Cranley[1] Nolan, probably born on the family farm in Douro Township, Peterborough County.[2]Ellen grew up and attended school in Douro.[3]
When she was 22, Ellen was living in Peterborough with her sister Emma Kennealy working as a dressmaker.[4] She married cab driver James O'Brien in St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto later that year.[5]
By 1894, Ellen and James were living in Minneapolis,[6] where two of their daughters and a son, James Jr., were born.[7][8][9]
By 1905, the family had moved to Mount Pleasant Michigan, near other members of the Nolan family, where their youngest son Anthony was born,[10] and where they remained through 1920.[11]
Research Notes
She is likely the Ellen Nolan O'Brien buried in Crystal Springs, Cemetery, Benton Harbor, Michigan, who was thought to have died at age 96, but was 100. The grave headstone appears incorrect since Ellen was already age 3 on the 1871 Ontario Census.[12]
Ellen's daughter Clara and son James were living in Benton Harbor, Michigan in 1930.[13] Ellen has not been found on the 1930 census.
