Ray was born in Davenport, Iowa, the sixth[1] of 12 children in the family of John and Bertha Heitzmann Nolan.[2]He attended parochial school in Davenport[3] and the family lived at 520 Vine St.[4] When he was 14, Ray was working as a salesman in a dry goods company.[5]
During World War I, he enlisted in the US Army on June 25, 1917 and and was discharged two years later.[6]After the war, he worked as a salesman for a paint factory in Davenport.[7] Ten years later, he was a salesman for a printing company,[8] and he continue that work for another decade.[9]
He married Peggy McVey in Davenport when he was 35 years old.[10] They were the parents of two daughters.
He started drawing on an Old Age Tax Assistance Program in 1945[11] and he also became owner of Nolan Office Supply in Davenport before 1940.,[12] and a former Davenport city alderman.
Ray's wife died in 1939, and her obituary noted that he was hospitalized with heart disease at the time of her death.[13] Ray died two years after his wife at the age of 46. He is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport, Iowa.[14]
