Emma was the sixth of eleven children born to Martin and Margaret Cranley Nolan.[1]she grew up on the family farm in Douro, Ontario, and attended school there.[2]
She married hotelkeeper William Kennealy when she was about 23. They lived in Peterborough after their marriage.[3]By 1891, they had three children and were still in Peterborough. Presumably, William was still running a hotel, though the census doesn't show his profession.[4] Emma's sister Ellen was living with them at the time.
In 1901, the family was living in Lakefield, and William's profession is again not listed on the census, though his earnings appear to be higher than other families nearby.[5] Emma's birthdate is listed only by the year 1861, though she had been listed as four years old on the 1861 census.
By 1911, Emma was a widow living with two of her children in Peterborough, including Margaret, who was a teacher.[6]
Ten years later, she was living in Peterborough with two of her sons.[7]
A son, Martin Herald Kennealy was born to William and Emma Nolan Kennealy in Peterborough, Ontario on November 20, 1891.[8] This may be a seventh child born between William Henry and Harold Kennealy, or it may be the correct birth date for Harold, who was listed on the 1901 census as born in 1892.
