Walter was the sixth of seven children born to Thomas and Emma Nolan in Peterborough County, Ontario,[1] possibly in the village of Lakefield. Two older children died before he was born.[2] His mother died when Walter was two years old, shortly after giving birth to a baby brother, who died a couple of weeks after his mother. Walter's father remarried when Walter was five.[3]
Walter emigrated to the US when he was 19.[4] He married Elizabeth L. Mill in Walla Walla, Washington, in 1923.[5]
They were living in Seattle with their four year old son, Walter Junior in 1930. He was working as a "lath man" in a machine shop.[6]Ten years later, the family was still in Seattle, and Walter was working as a freight elevator operator in a mail order department store, where his wife also worked.[7] Walter had applied for citizenship in 1938.[8]
