Biography

Pierce Noland was married to Sarah Awbrey (also Aubrey) by 8 March 1748.[1] She was the daughter of Francis Awbrey and sister of Elizabeth, who had married Philip, Pierce's brother. Sarah was not married at the time her father wrote his will (22 February 1741).[2]

Research Notes

Pierce Noland, the son of Philip and Bridget (Caroll) Noland,[4] was born about 1721, probably in Virginia.[5][6] While some descendants believe he was the son of Pierce Noland and Elizabeth Darrell, most Noland researchers have his parents as Philip Noland and Bridget (some including Bridget's maiden name as Carrol). Pierce probably died in Virginia, although his son George migrated to Wilkes County, Georgia, around 1789 (George's son Pierce was born in Virginia that year).[7][8] Sharon Winsatt notes persuasive evidence that Pierce is Philip's son, based on the Fairfax County VA Deed Book B Page 334-record of sale of land of Philip Noland's land by his heirs. Peter and wife Ann, Philip and Elizabeth, Pierce and Sary, Paul and Mary.[1]

The 1748 Fairfax County land record[1] that supports Pierce/Pearce as son of Philip also supports that he was married to Sarah by that date. That his wife was Sarah Awbrey is based on her father's will, written 22 February 1741, which stated that if Sarah's mother died, she was to go to her sister Elizabeth, who was married to Philip Nowland, Pierce's brother.[2]

Pierce and Elizabeth (Darrell) Noland: Following is from the profile for Pierce Noland, born 1696, attached as husband to the profile for Elizabeth Darrell. It may be that this Pierce (born c1696) is the Pierce found in South Carolina. A comment on his profile (Noland-497) notes that the author of Milesian Mountaineers, J. Lynn Noland, says "Edward Ronshiem believed that this son Pierce was the same man who took land in Newberry, South Carolina in 1762." (There is no main DAR record for a Pierce Noland. Closest relative with a DAR record that I found was Thomas,[9] son of Philip & Elizabeth.) The reference in the followingto Pierce's will of 20 January 1715 is the most that Noland researchers have found of that will.

Pierce of South Carolina

An online tree which transcribes the deed to say "" identifies the Pierce in Newberry, SC (d 1773) as this Pierce (husband of Sarah) and gives him a second wife, Rebecca Pennington.[10] The will of Isaac Pennington that names Pierce Noland as husband to his daughter Rebecca was probated 1760:
  • "3 Mar 1760: Isaac Pennington's will filed in Berkeley County, SC. Heirs included two sons: Jacob and Isaac, who were given land on the Enoree River. Also listed were daughters: Charity (wife of Charles King ), Mary (wife of John Patterson), Lydia (wife of Samuel Cannon), Rebecca (wife of Pierce Noland), Alice, Rachel and Cesaiah. The will was probated 17 Sep 1760"[11]
The unsourced Find a Grave memorial for this Pierce says that he died in 1773 in South Carolina.[12]
WikiTree has a profile for Rebecca - Rebecca (Pennington) Noland (abt.1742-) - which includes the following from a 2017 comment from me: "...another Pierce Noland (Noland-696) has a profile for a son born in NC attached... more likely him or a closer relative than Pierce m Sarah Awbrey (Noland-116, my 5x-gr-grand, & believed to have died in Virginia).

to clarify Linda's comment - the Noland who died 1733 is Noland-120 (Philip m Bridget, father of this Pierce & of Philip, who married Awbrey sisters)

Violet Noland Gray has Pierce as the son of Philip and Bridget and he died about 1733 in Prince William Co., VA. His brother, Philip, married Elizabeth Awbrey, both daughters of Francis.

Author of Milesian Mountaineers, J. Lynn Noland believes this Pierce may have migrated to Newberry County, South Carolina, possibly as early as 1750, when he & wife Sarah sold land she had inherited from her father Francis Awbry. In a 1758 deed, says Noland, "we find Pierce as a party along with a Henry Awbrey of South Carolina." He also speculates that Pierce died 'prior to 1773 since he is absent from the 1773 deed and none of his heirs appear as grantors. ....There may have been children named Philip, Pierce and Sarah." (pp 106-107)

Henry Noland's DNA (FTDNA yDNA test) matched with yDNA from someone descended from William Noland (Noland-143), son of Pierce, born ca 1628 in Ireland.

Sarah Avery Noland is probably the daughter of Pierce & Sarah Awbrey.
