Biography

Richard Norcross immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Richard Norcross was baptized at All Hallows, Bread Street in London on 16 Dec 1621.[1] He was the son of Jeremiah and Adrean/Audrie (____) (Smith) Norcross. He arrived in New England before 27 Nov 1639 with his parents and settled at Watertown, Massachusetts.[2]

Richard was the first schoolmaster in Watertown.[2]

He married first at Watertown, Massachusetts, on 24 Jun 1650 to Mary Brooks (b.c. 1630-1632, d. 24 Feb 1671/2), daughter of Henry Brooks. They had the following children, all born in Watertown:[2] [3]

  1. Mary, b. 27 Aug 1652, d. 19 Oct 1661;
  2. Jeremiah, b. 3 Mar 1655, d. 30 Nov 1717;
  3. Sary, b. 28 Dec 1657, d.c. Mar 1700/01, m. Joseph Child;
  4. Richard Jr., b. 4 Aug 1660, d. aft. Oct 1943, m1. Rose Woodward, m2. Hannah Sanderson;
  5. Mary, b. 10 Jul 1663, d. aft. 19 Mar 1714/5, m. John Stearns;
  6. Nathaniel, b. 18 Dec 1665, d. 1 Dec 1717, m1. Mehitabel Hagar, m2. Susanna Shattuck;
  7. Samuel, b. 4 May 1671, d. aft. 26 Apr 1708.

Richard married second at Watertown on 18 Nov 1673 to Susanna, widow of William Shattuck. She died 11 Dec 1686 at Watertown.[2]

Richard died between 13 May 1709 and Oct 1709 at Watertown.[2]
