Marriage Johes Emery to 15 Aug 1586 Durley, Hampshire, England to Margaret Stevens (indexed in error as Clemens) image 11 https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/245289:6242 - entry found 2 June 2023 with (digital and indexed) Hampshire Parish registers posted by ancestry.com

Disputed Origins

John Emery's second wife is frequently named in family trees and in old publications as Agnes Northend of Romsey, Hampshire, England. There are no parish records, probate records, or other credible evidence to support that Agnes' birth surname or even a married surname was Northend. (The confusion likely stems from mistaking a Yorkshire couple with these names who were married in 1597.)

An Agnes (of unknown maiden surname, 1577-1624) was the second wife of John Emery (c1572-c1627) (son of John Emery and Alice Banet).

A different woman named Agnes Northend (1576-1614) married a different John Emery on 22 Oct 1597 at Rowley, Yorkshire, England (250 miles north of Romsey).

Research Notes

There was also a marriage on 24 Oct 1597 in Romsey, England between Thomas Emery and Thomasine Carter. It looks as though some mixing and matching has taken place. There's an extremely well researched post at "John Emery husband of Agnes Northend" by david11000 on ancestry message boards, which goes into this family. (I know it's well researched because I wrote it!)

The marriage Johes Emery to Margaret Stevens 15 Aug. 1586 in Durley, Hampshire is interesting, but it is far from proof needed to identify the wife of John Emery of Romsey and mother to John and Anthony Emery, emigrants to New England. Durley and Romsey are 13 miles apart. The marriage occurred in 1586, but no children are recorded in Durley or Romsey until 1599. The elder John Emery was buried in Romsey in 1627, and it would seem like his supposed wife Margaret/Margery Emery would also be buried there. The only burial in the Romsey parish register with such a name is for Margery Emery buried 14 Sept. 1610 in Romsey, but she is listed as a widow, so not the wife of John who did not die until 1627. There is a Bennet Emry, a widow, buried 22 Jan. 1628/9 in Romsey that may instead be the surviving wife of John, but there is no way to know. As for the Johes Emery in Durley, it looks like he is the Johes Emery who was buried there 11 Dec. 1591. That burial is not identified as a child, and there are no Emery baptisms in the Durley parish register for that time period so that it looks like he was the Johes Emery who married in 1586, died 5 years later, and consequently not the same person as John Emery who lived in Romsey. The given name and maiden surname of the wife of John Emery of Romsey who died in 1627 remains unknown.

How do we know she died about 1624 when we don't even know her name?

Northend-99 and Northend-4 appear to represent the same person because: It's the same person, but I'm not convinced that either is correct about her parents and location.

Northend-92 and Northend-4 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same husband. No dates or places, no sources. Same person

I believe the mother for Agnes is given incorrectly in this profile, and also that both parents need to be switched to [uncertain]. From what I've been able to gather, no definitive record identifying the wife of John Emery (father of Anthony) has been identified. genealogist Ken Burns was able to locate a record for the marriage of John Emery and Agnes Northend in the Yorkshire "Bishop's Transcripts." Unless I'm misinterpreting his findings, this record confirmed that a John Emery and an Agnes Northend were married in Yorkshire in 1597, but that Agnes was actually the daughter of John Northend III (who I believe is correctly attached to this profile) and Alice OLDFIELD. It's worth noting that this couple married in Yorkshire, so not particularly close to Romsey, Hampshire where the John and Agnes of this profile lived. That doesn't mean that they can't be the same John and Anges, though. I think, then, that the parents of Agnes should be listed as John Northend [Uncertain] and Alice Oldfield [Uncertain] until more information comes along. Either that or just listing her parents as [unknown] because like I said we don't know for sure that Ken Burn's record was for this John and Agnes.

Again, I could be incorrect because there seems to be a massive amount of controversy surrounding the true identity of John Emery's wife and there could have been new information that I missed, but I think the record Ken Burns found is the most informative one identified so far.

This profile and those connected with it need some work. They seem to have a lot of sources, but they don't contain a lot of information and neither does the profile.

Northend-46 and Northend-4 appear to represent the same person because: Same person - merged duplicate abandoned profiles, now ready for final merge into Northend-4. Death date of 1604 is uncertain and 1624 is supported by my notes.
