Son of James Sturges Northrup (1795-1865) & Susannah Cox (1799-1868). His grandfather, Benajah Northrup, was born in Fairfield, CT and came north as a Loyalist refugee from the American Revolution in 1783.
James and his wife Joanna Barlow (Benson) had eight known children, the last was born just ten days after his father's death. The boy was named James Edward to honor his father (though this child died in 1866).
Whether James died of an injury or illness, at 39 years, in unknown. He was buried at Springfield Anglican Cemetery in Kings County, New Brunswick.
James E. Northrup's widow married his cousin, Benjamin James Northrup in 1870.
