My great grandfather was a telegrapher, and taught all of his four daughters and one son to be telegraphers. All got jobs and were stationed at various railroad stations, especially in Wyoming. My grandmother, May, used to love to tell the story that Wild Bill Cody's winter camp was in Cody, WY, and he would be travelling all over, and knew all the Nortons He would always enter the station and walk up to the window, and ask, "Now which Norton girl are you?" with a laugh. Grandma also taught me about how a telegraph could tell who was sending the message by the rhythm of the dots and dashes, they called that sound the telegrapher's "fist".
