James was born about 1827 in Horry County, South Carolina. He was the son of John Norton and Nancy Phillips.
On March 27, 1854 he was issued a license to marry Ruth Maxwell. They were married on March 29, 1854 in Barbour County, Alabama. His brother William K. Norton performed the ceremony. [1]
