Daniel Norton was baptised on the 15th of October 1568, son of Richard Norton of East Tisted and his second wife, Katherine Kingsmill. [1][2] His father died in 1592 but, as a younger son, Daniel still had to find his own way. This he did by marrying, on the 30th of October 1606 ,Honor, daughter and joint heiress of Sir John Whyte of Southwick Park and his wife, Frances Butler. [3][2][4] [5] They came into possession of Southwick on John's death in 1607. Together they had four sons and four daughters.[1]
Daniel had been knighted on the 23rd of July 1603 [6] and it was as Sir Daniel that he was returned to Parliament in 1621 as member for Portsmouth. In 1623 when Prince Charles and the Duke of Buckingham returned from their abortive journey to Spain it was Daniel who loaned the coach to take them to London. Charles I stayed at Southwick in June 1627 while he waited for a fleet to be ready. Southwick was an ideal lodging for Portsmouth so the visit was not a particular mark of favour. The King was again at Southwick in 1628 and it was there that he learned of Buckingham's murder in Portsmouth.[1]
Staunchly Protestant, Daniel was a good friend of his neighbour, Sir John Cooper, and became guardian of Sir John's son, Anthony Ashley Cooper, when the father died in 1631.[1]
Daniel wrote his will on the 28th of March 1635, appointing his wife as executrix and died on the 4th of July 1636. He was buried at Southwick.[1]
