Biography
"res. E. (Edgartown), trader; rem. to Newport abt. 1703, where he afterwards lived and was engaged in mercantile and maritime pursuits; he owned vessels which were engaged in West Indian and coastwise trade. (Saybrook Conn. Records.) He m. (1) DINAH (or Dionis) COFFIN (21), who was b. 21 Sept. 1671 (the dau. of STEPHEN and MARY (Bunker) COFFIN), and (2) Mrs. HANNAH (Allen) BARKER of Pembroke, Mass. wid. of Isaac, 8 June 1727. He d. in Newport 27 Nov. 1743, and his will 16 Sept. 1742 was recorded 10 Jan. 1743-4 (Newport Town Council Records (1743-50) p. 12)."[1] It names:
son Jacob Norton, giving common lands at Edgerton and on "Chapaquidock" Island
grandson Peter Norton, son of his son Shubael Norton deceased, given a quarter part of his island called "Nomans Land"
daughter Mary Norton, wife of Samuel Norton, given common lands at Edgerton
daughter Elizabeth Trott, wife of Benjamin Trott of Nantuckett, given three lots in Edgerton; also quitclaimed some land "which was her mothers," with stipulations that any others who try to sue her for it will fall out of his estate
daughter Dinah Allen, wife of Jethro Allen, given common lands in Edgarton
granddaughter Sarah Norton, daughter of son Shubael Norton deceased, given common lands in Edgarton
grandson Daniel Norton, son of his son-in-law Samuel Norton, given land in Duke's County (description smudged)
daughter Abigail Norton "which I had by my last wife," given his household goods
cousin Joseph Martin of Portsmouth, Rhode Island yeoman given 10 acres at Edgarton "adjoyning to ye House of Joseph Pease"
