Surname: The name Hesdin has been retained as Current Last Name because (a) she would never have been called FitzFlaald or FitzWalter (b) she sued for dower under the name de Hesdin after the death of her first husband. [7]
Given Name: Several deeds call her Aveline. One deed calls her Adeline, but that could be a miscopy. One Adelize was said by Dugdale to be the same person, but probably wasn't. [7]
Aveline was the daughter of Arnoul de Hesdin, in Picardie, and his wife Emmeline. [8]
Her parentage is confirmed by Orderic Vitalis who records that Ernulf de Hesdin was avunculus (uncle) of "William fitz Alan castellan and vicecomes of Shrewsbury". [8][6]
Aurnulf, Signor de Hesding of Picardy, of whom Adeliza de Hesding was a younger daughter, held great estates in England at the time of the Domesday Book in 1086.[5]
Her parents were Arnulf, Seigneur de Hesdin, and his wife Ameline de Lacey [2]
Wikipedia notes her as Avelina de Hesdin, daughter of Ernulf de Hesdin.[9]
Ada or Avelina's father Ernoulf de Hesdin was killed on crusade at Antioch. Ernulf de Hesdin had been the tenant-in-chief in ten counties at the time of Domesday. [10]
Eyton rejected, for lack of evidence, the alternate theory that Avelina was the "dau(ghter) and heir of Warine, Sheriff of Shropshire, temp. William the Conqueror." as reported by Dugdale. The underlying reasoning seems to be that Alan held the lands formerly held by the sheriffs of the county and goes back at least as far as William Dugdale, but it was rejected by Eyton,[65] not least because of lack of any evidence. [10]
Round traced the elder Ernulf's activities in Picardy and confirmed that he had a daughter, called Ava in this context, who was named as one of those consenting to a charter granting family holdings at Hesdin to the Priory of St George, a Benedictine house subject to Anchin Abbey and located by Vieil-Hesdin, the original site of the town of Hesdin. The priory's record of the grant makes clear that Ernulf was riding in the entourage of William Rufus and returning to England at the time.[10]
Aveline's father Ernulf is named with property in Domesday, so assume she was born in England. [10]
Alan grew up in Brittany where he met Henry and came to England, and received responsibilities, with Henry's arrival. [10]
Avelina De Hesding was born about 1080 in Picardy, France, the daughter of Ernulf, who was born about 1038 in Hesdin. [11]
No documentation of a birth year, however, has been found. Her father Arnulf is shown born in 1038 (died 1097, First Crusade), and her mother Emmeline shown born 1040 (died 1111). Her siblings Marilda and Warine are both shown born 1065, when her parents would have been 27 and 25, respectively. Her own children are currently shown with birth years of 1103, 1105, and 1110. This would suggest that Aveline herself married shortly before these dates , and was born no later than 1080.
Her first marriage to Alan is estimated as 1101, in England, soon after King Henry's accession to the throne.
Placing her birth would at 1080 would make her aged 21 at the time of her marriage.
Her father Ernulf either accompanied William the Conqueror at Hastings in 1066, or came to England soon thereafter, acquiring large estates by the time of Domesday in 1086. It is therefore not certain whether Aveline was born in Picardy or in England.
Ernulph II
Ernulph II Hesding was born 1068 in Hesdin, Pas-de-Calais, France. [4]
Arnoul (Ernulf) de Hesdin was killed in 1138. [12]
Orderic Vitalis records that Ernulf de Hesdin was avunculus of "William fitz Alan castellan and vicecomes of Shrewsbury" and was hanged by King Stephen after the battle of Shrewsbury in 1138[1700]. [12]
In about 1101 Avelina married Alan FitzFlaald. Cawley notes, without further elaboration that Adeline (Aveline) de Hesdin was the second wife of Alan Fitz Flaald. [13]
Adeline married firstly, in the period 1100-1105, as his second wife, Alain FitzFlaald, son of Flaald, Seneschal of Dol & his wife --- Alain died before 1114. [6][2]
It is assumed that her [first] marriage took place early in the reign of Henry I (1100-1135) King of England, since Henry sponsored her husband’s rise to prominence in England as shown by the king’s charters in which he is named. [8][6]
Henry I King of England confirmed an agreement between the bishop of Norwich and "Avelinam de Hesding" concerning "terra de Ettona" by charter dated to [1121/27]. [12]
At the time she was a wealthy heiress. [14]
Her father, a vassal of King Henry I, having died in the First Crusade, responsibility for seeing her married well would have fallen to Henry, and granting Avelina to Alan would have been a sign of Henry's favor to Alan.
Therefore estimate the marriage to have taken place in England, soon after Alan's arrival, say, 1101. Their three sons would then be born in the years soon following.
Alan gained a stake in the very large estates of Ernulf de Hesdin by marriage to his daughter, Avelina.[10]
A charter of Henry II King of England, dated 1176, recites donations to Haughmond abbey including that of "Willielmus filius Alani" of "terram de Piperinges" previously enjoyed by "Aveline matris ipsius Willielmi filius Alani"[1708]. [12]
“Alanus filius Flaaldi et Adelina uxor mea” donated property to Castle Acre Priory by undated charter[1704]. [12]
Between their marriage in 1105 and his death in 1114, “Alanus filius Flaaldi et Adelina uxor mea” donated property to Castle Acre Priory by undated charter. [8]
A charter of Henry II King of England, dated 1176, recites donations to Haughmond abbey including that of "Willielmus filius Alani" of "terram de Piperinges" previously enjoyed by "Aveline matris ipsius Willielmi filius Alani". [8] [6]
The Historia sancti Petri Gloucestriæ records that "Robertus filius Walteri et Avelina uxor eius" donated "ecclesiam de Nortone", as previously donated by "Elmelina mater Avelinæ ante plures annos". [6]
"Robertus filius Walteri et Avelina uxor sua" donated "ecclesiam de Northona" to Gloucester St Peter by undated charter. [6]
“Margareta uxor Hamonis de Sancto Claro” donated “Stoches...manerium meum cum suis appendiciis de Sudfolchia et Norfolc...sicut...michi pater meus concessit” to Colchester St. John, for the souls of “patris mei Roberti et Aueline matris mee et Johannis fratris mei”, by undated charter. [8][6]
Early researcher, Eyton, read in Dugdale's History of Warwickshire that in 1114, Adeliza made a gift of land to Burton Abbey. [9]
Alan died between 1114 and 1121.
Alan died 1114[2]
Eyton states that Dugdale intimates that "Dame Adeliza" who donated land at Wolston to Burton abbey, by charter dated to before 1114, was Alan FitzFlaad’s widow and the mother of "Sibil" who with her husband Roger de Freville confirmed her mother’s donation by charter dated 1132[940]. [8][6]
Henry I King of England confirmed an agreement between the bishop of Norwich and "Avelinam de Hesding" concerning "terra de Ettona" by charter dated to [1121/27] [8][6]
Adeline (Aveline), widow of Alain FitzFlaald, married, as her second husband, Robert FitzWalter, of Caen. [8] "Robertus filius Walteri et Avelina uxor sua" donated "ecclesiam de Northona" to Gloucester St Peter by undated charter[936]. [8][6]
Aveline remarried Robert fitz Walter of Caen. It's unclear whether he was the same person as Robert fitz Walter of Woodham Ferrers or Robert fitz Walter of Horsford or neither. [7]
A family connection between Robert FitzWalter and the Giffard family of Gloucestershire is suggested by the undated charter under which "Walterus Giffardus" granted land "in Ullingwike", including part "quæ fuit Roberti filii Walterii", to "Gilberto Giffardo fratri meo"[937]. [8][6]
No children have been shown of this union. If she was still a widow in 1121, and had died 5 years later, estimate her second marriage for the year 1122.
After Alan's death, Avelina married, as her 2nd husband, Robert fitz Walter, Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk.[9] as shown in a grant, dated no earlier than 1126, of their church at Chipping Norton to Gloucester Abbey.[10]
Aveline de Hesdin died about 1126. [2] she died about 1126 in Oswestry, Shropshire, England[5]
Aveline died after 1126. [8][2]
