Francis was born in 1856 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. [1] Research into his parents is still ongoing: they may be Michael Norton and Ann (Adams) Norton, married in 1851 in Liverpool, and on the 1871 census are living in Liverpool, Lancashire, with their children. [2]
Francis signed on for ten years as a "Boy" in the navy, beginning aboard the HMS Eagle. He served on several ships with Samuel Thomas Farley, the man who was to become his brother-in-law, who maybe introduced Francis to his sister, Mary Jane Farley.
Francis and Mary Jane married on 28 December 1879 [3]in her home town of Millbrook, Cornwall, England. Francis was doing gunnery training on HMS Cambridge at the time of their marriage. On the 1881 census, Francis is an AB Seaman on HMS Swift with his brother-in-law. [4][5][6] He is absent from home on the 1891 census, so probably still at sea, then pensioned off in 1896. On the 1901 census, he is a baker in Millbrook.[7]
Francis and Mary Jane had seven children: Martha, Mabel, Beatrice, Francis William, Edith, Irene, and Reginald.
Francis's death (age 47) was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1902 in the St Germans district.[8]
