Revolutionary War Military Service

General John Norwood was born in Virginia sometime around 1744 to 1753. He married Jane Pickens (1755-1800) the daughter of Robert Pickens (1725-1793) and Miriam Unknown (-1793).

John Norwood was a Patriot and stared his military career as a Private in the South Carolina District 96 militia. He was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain under the command of General Andrew Pickens.

Little River District Regiment - 1781-1782

He was involved in numerous skirmishes and battles:

Kettle Creek (GA) - Feb. 14, 1779

Siege of Charleston - Mar. 28 - May 12, 1780

Eutaw Springs - Sep. 8, 1781

Pratt's Mill - Oct. 3, 1781 (wounded)

Indian Villages - Mar. 1, 1782

After the war he remained with the local militia and eventually earned the rank of General.
