Biography

Name

Henry Norwood, Esq., of West Camel, Somerset, was the son of William Norwood, Esq., of Leckhampton, Gloucestershire, and Elizabeth Ligon.[1][2] His date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated, but a possible baptism record was found for a Henry, son of William, baptized 22 December 1578 at Cheltenham, St Mary, Gloucestershire.[3] Leckhampton is a district in south Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford University, and was admitted a member of Middle Temple in 1598 as the second son of William Norwood of Leckhampton.[1][4]

Marriage

Henry married Elizabeth Rodney, widow of James Kirton of Somerset, and daughter of John Rodney, Knt., of Rodney Stoke, Somerset, by Jane Seymour[1][5] (see research notes). They had two sons and one daughter:

Death

Henry Norwood left a will dated 27 March 1616 and proved 5 November 1616.[1] In his will he named the children of James Kyrton, Esq., deceased, the former husband of his now wife Elizabeth Norwood; his daughter Jane Norwood, under 21; sons Charles and Henry Norwood; brother-in-law Sir Edward Rodney, Knt.; and his brother Thomas Norwood.[8] An Inquisition Post Mortem, held at Gloucester on 20 September 1632 recorded that Henry Norwood was seised in fee-tail after the death of his father William of the manor and rectory of Badgeworth, Gloucestershire and the advowson of the vicarage of Badgeworth, all of which were held of the King in chief by the 60th part of a knights fee. Henry's death date was noted as 29 March 1616, and that his son and next heir Charles was then aged 2 years, 7 months and 26 days.[9] (The statement about Charles' age points to Charles being born on 3 August 1613, which is incompatible with his baptism date of 1 August.)

Research Notes

Wife's Previous Marriage

Richardson states that Henry's wife was the widow of James Kirton and Paine Fisher. However, two years after Henry's death, an Elizabeth Norwood married Payne Fisher at St Luke, Chelsea, London on 24 December 1618.[10] Paine Fisher was an uncommon name and it's too much of a coincidence for him to have married an Elizabeth Norwood for it to have been another similarly named couple. The marriage entry shows no other detail, other than it was by licence. It throws out the order of the three husbands, but doesn't really affect the overall situation.

I have removed the Magna Carta Project as a manager, and associated information, as Henry is not in trails from Magna Carta Barons to Gateways.

Son Charles' birthdate is confirmed as being about 1613, by the details of age given in Henry's IPM.
Thanks. The IPM says, according to the transcript published by the British Records Society, that Charles was 2 years 7 months and 26 days at his father's death on 29 March 1616. That points to a birth date of 3 August 1613. But Charles was baptised on 1 August 1613. (I am adding another source for the baptism date.) I have now mentioned the discrepancy in the paragraph referring to the IPM.

Hi Michael,

Yes, I wasn't implying anything needed to be changed, just that the confirmation of a 1613 birthdate meant that there was no other mother involved as per this statement that was previously on his profile. "Henry's March 1616 will names daughter Jane as a minor, but there's no such description for his sons Charles and Henry. For his sons to have been of age in 1616 means being born before 1595. Could Henry have had a first wife with whom he had his sons?" Cheers, Elizabeth :-)

Thanks, Elizabeth, for the clarification.

In celebration of the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta, the Magna Carta Project is reviewing and enhancing all the profiles between Magna Carta Sureties and Gateway Ancestors. A. Tompkins and I are doing what we can to enhance the trail between Henry de Bohun and Henry Norwood. We appreciate all the work that has already been done to this profile and look forward to any additional contributions we can make to it.
