Biography

Francis Nunn Jr's birth year is unknown. D.G. Nunn, author of "John Nunn Revolutionary Soldier" pointed out that it had to have been before 1721, but believed it was probably closer to 1714. But he also states that Joshua Nunn was Francis Nunn Jr's second child and Joshua died in 1743 with children and an estate. If true, that would mean that Francis Nunn Jr's birth year must have been much closer to 1700 than 1714. Likewise, the birthplace of Francis Nunn Jr is unknown. D.G. Nunn speculates that it was "probably somewhere in the Carolinas", but there is no evidence for that statement. In fact, people were flooding into North Carolina from Virginia in the early 1700's. (1)

We have no idea when Francis Nunn Jr married his wife Elizabeth, whose maiden name is unknown. Again, if Joshua Nunn above was her son, the marriage would have been by 1720. We know Francis and Elizabeth had a son Joshua, who was deceased by 1745, because on "18 Jun 1745, at the Court House in New Bern, "Mr. John Cox who intermarried the Mother of Joshuah Nunn came into Court and proved an accounting against the Estate of the said Joshuah Nunn..."(1) . John Cox was widow Elizabeth Nunn's second husband. (1) There may have been two Joshua Nunn's, one a brother of Francis Nunn Jr and the other a son who was younger. If that were the case, it would alter estimates of Francis Nunn Jr's birth and marriage dates.

When Francis' father, Francis Nunn Sr., died intestate in 1738 the eldest son, William inherited the estate, including 540 acres on the Neuse River that his father, Francis Nunn Sr., had purchased in 1729. After the estate was probated in 1739, William sold his younger brother, Francis Jr., 250 acres of that plot on 17 Aug 1740. On that same day, Francis Nunn Jrs two minor sisters chose their guardians. Sister Elizabeth chose John Cox and sister Ann chose her brother, William Nunn. (1)

Francis Nunn sold John Cox the above 250 acres on 16 Dec 1745, but author D.G. Nunn believes the seller was Francis Nunn III, who had inherited the land from his father, Francis Nunn Jr, who had died in the early 1740's. (1) This resurrects the issue of Francis Nunn Jr's birth year. If was born circa 1714, any child he had would have been a minor at the time of the land's sale in 1746. While a minor could inherit property, they had to be at least 21 years old to convey it. The math doesn't work.

At any rate, it is known that Francis Nunn Jr. was deceased before 18 Jun 1745, when at the Court House in New Bern, "Mr. John Cox who intermarried the Mother of Joshuah Nunn came into Court and proved an accounting against the Estate of the said Joshuah Nunn...". Then followed that on 19 Dec 1746 in the Court of Common Pleas at New Bern with a petition from "John Cox and his wife, Eliza, natural guardians to Jno. and Milly Nunn, Orphans of Francis Nunn, deceased", requesting that William Nunn give an accounting of Francis' Estate as it pertained to the children. (1)

In summary, no one knows when, or where, Francis Nunn Jr was born. No one knows exactly when he was married, or his wife's maiden name. We only know he died sometime between 1740 and 1745. Francis is believed to have had four children: Francis Nunn III, Joshua, John and Elizabeth, the last two being minors at Francis Nunn Jr's death. Only one marriage is known, to Elizabeth, who after his death remarried to John Cox. It is quite possible that Francis had an earlier marriage, since the two older sons were believed to be adults at his death and the two younger children, John and Elizabeth, were believed to be minors and under ten years.
