Biography

John was born about 1750, possibly in Virginia. No primary record evidence has been found which proves his parentage. There was an older Nunn, Richard Nunn, in the vicinity where he settled, but no connection has been proved. John Nunn was a farmer, slave owner and Baptist minister.

He lived near the state lines of Virginia and North Carolina and appears in primary records in Surry and Stokes Counties, NC and Patrick County, VA. He received several land grants[1] in Surry County, NC in the 1780s.

He was ordained[2] a Baptist minister in Patrick County, VA in 1794. John Nunn gave bond with two securities as a Baptist minister who could perform marriages in the county.

He made a will[3] in Stokes County, NC dated 1 December 1805 and proved at the March 1806 county court. He named wife Mary, Henry Floyd, sons Thomas and James and brother William. He signed his will so as apparently literate. He named several slaves in his will. He mentions crops and land so was a farmer. His name appears to be spelled "Nunns" in his will. His heirs later made a deed[4] in Patrick County, VA.
