Biography

The birth year of Mary, daughter of Benjamin and Katherine Tupper Nye, has been estimated as 1641.[1]

A marriage between "Jacob Borg and Mary Nie" is transcribed as "the first of June 1660."[2] They had at least five children together and there are no confirmed death dates for Jacob or Mary.[1]

Children

  • Deborah b "1660's" ; m Nathan Fish[1]
  • Samuel b 08 Mar 1671[1]
  • Ebenezer b between 1671-1680[1]
  • Jacob b between 1671-1680[1]
  • Thomas b between 1671-1680[1]
  • Benjamin [1]

Research Notes

There is a Sandwich birth record for a Mary Nie, daughter of Benjamin, transcribed as April 8, 1652.[3] This is a misreading of the original record, which shows she was Mercy.[4]
No primary sources have been found to confirm the 1706 death date reported in various publications.

Research Notes & Sources

I have checked Sandwich Births, 1803-1843 Deaths, 1803-1843 Intentions of Marriages 2nd Marriages, 1813-1837 [5] and have taken a screen shot of the hand written birth record for "Mary Nie, daughter of Benjamin Nie who was born April 8, 1652." [6]

I have checked the above mentioned marriage between "Jacob Borg and Mary Nie" is transcribed as "the first of June 1660" and I concur that is what the hand written record appears to state. [7] If Mary Nie's birth date is accurate and she was born in 1641 then she would have been about 19 when she married Jacob Borg. This is not unreasonable. However, if Mary Nie's real birth year was 1652 then she would have been 8 years young if she was married in 1660. I did see where someone had written "Mercy" next to "Mary", however they wrote "Mercy" next to 3 other Mary's, so I am not going to speculate that all three families had a Mercy child written down wrong as a Mary. For the moment I am going to assume that original record meant "Mary" and disregard Mercy. Perhaps the writer meant to impart some mercy on these 4 separate children ?

It would be helpful to know what other sources were consulted that showed a death date of 1706 for Mary Nie Borg/Burgess. I did find an application for a U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970 that Ancestry said had the name "Mary Nye" and a death date of "23 Jun 1706", https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/697756:2204 [8]There is a reference to a "Fanny Nye", b. 1778, married 7-23-1807 and d. 9-28-1835, wife of "3 Great grand-son, Elisha Burgess", b. 1-16-1775 and d. 1-4-1860 and later, in the sam document there is a reference to a Mary "Nye", b. (type written very faintly) "1652" and d. 6-23-1706, who was wife of "7 Great grand-son, Jacob Burgess", b. 10-18-1676, married 6-1-1660 and d. 3-17-1719.

Since the only information I have seen on Mary Nie/Nye's death was on a typewritten document I am going to remove the date from her profile and leave it blank for the time being, as "uncertain."
