Suicide at the Parkside Asylum
An enquiry was held on Wednesday morning at the Parkside Lunatic Asylum by the city coroner (Dr, Whittell) into the cause of the death of Elizabeth Phillips, who died at the institution on Tuesday.
Witness found that the door of the storeroom was not actually fastened, and on examining the lock discovered that the key had been turned and the bolt shot as if it had been fastened. The bolt, however, had not actually caught in the catch. Had never known this to happen before. Witness thought she was the last person in the storeroom, and she was deceived with reference to the lock catching.
Bridget Farrell, the senior laundress, said she had been about three years at the asylum. Examined the lock after the deceased expired, and at that time the door had been properly locked. Had never known an accident similar to that desoribed by the previous witness to happen before.
