Biography

James O'Neill (O'Neal) was born in Randalstown, County Antrim, Ireland.[1] He was baptized 10 Nov 1815 at St. Patricks on Donegall Street in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland. [2] He married Sarah Dougherty, of Aghalee, Country Antrim. He immigrated to America, arriving in Charleston on 1 Oct 1851 and petitioned to become an American citizen in 1872.[3] James died by suicide at his home in Brushy Creek Twp, Anderson Co SC on 28 Sep 1892. [4]. The news report noted that "his mind is said to have lately become unbalanced." O"Neal cut his throat with a razor on a Friday but lingered for several days before passing away. A doctor was called to help and sewed up the wound, but he didn't expect O'Neal to live. O'Neal told the doctor, "he would not object to him sewing up the gash as long as he would give him strychnine afterward." He was buried at Springwood Cemetery in Greenville SC.[5]
