Biography

John Shea married Julia Sullivan at the Kanturk Catholic chapel on 25 Jan 1875. Civil Certificate states he is a farm labourer resident of Breagogue at the village of Buttevant. Julia is listed as a ..? servant resident at "Knockavelling??" at the village of Kanturk. One of the witnesses was Johanna Sullivan.

John "Shea" (25) with his wife Julia (23) their son James (3) and their daughter Bridget (1) arrived Australia 11 Sep 1878 on ship "Dunbar Castle". This ship of 925 tons left London on 1 Jun 1878 with 356 passengers. (Qld Archive shipping records "Dunbar Castle" Page 4.)

21 Jan 1879: Death of their son James (3) A death certificate for a James Shea (Qld Cert. No. 1879/C/586) shows Father John, Mother Julia Sullivan. Burial of James Shea Drayton & Toowoomba cemetery 22 Jan 1879.

26 Sep 1879: Patrick Shea (Patrick Michael O’Shea) born to John Shea and Julia Sullivan Qld Birth Cert. 1879/C/1979. (Patricia Nettleton said her father was born at Harlaxton in Toowoomba).

30 Dec 1881 Denis O’Shea born to John O’Shea and Julia Sullivan.

October 1882 John O’Shea places an advertisement in the Toowoomba Chronicle to the effect that he is now the proprietor of Hallinan’s Hotel Ruthvern Street Toowoomba. April 1883 Licence granted to J. O'Shea for Farmers Home Hotel 303 Ruthvern Street Toowoomba. 11 Jun 1883 Eugene O’Shea born (According to John’s grandson Bernard O’Shea, Eugene “Hughie” was born on the Pub billiard table.)

18 Feb 1885 John Benedict O’Shea born.

Circa 1885 The family left the pub and took up a block of land at Geham. This was later forfeited due to non- payment of lease and no improvements being done. 1886 John O’Shea named as insolvent and listed as former publican and currently labourer Jondaryan, Acland. Circa 1886 Block 4088 adjoining the land owned by John's father near Acland, east of Jondaryan, was purchased in the name of Julia O’Shea. This became the home block. (This is in O’Shea’s Road. His father and brothers Denis and James also owned land nearby). The house was made of bush timber and was located near a gully to be near Government well on road. John O’Shea augmented his income by working on the Railway line between Oakey & Jondaryan. 5 Jun 1887 Julia O’Shea born 1 May 1889 Mary (May) Ann O’Shea born. 21 Jan 1891 Daniel Thomas born. 16 Apr 1893 Hannorah Delia (Delia) Philipine O’Shea born. 26 Mar 1896 Cornelius (Con) Gerald O’Shea born. 23 Jun 1898 John O’Shea dies of Tuberculosis. (Aged 47 years 6 months Qld death cert. No. 1898/1330 769) Buried in Jondaryan Cemetery
