Isaac was a private in the Virginia Militia from 1776-78.

Around 1790, Isaac moved his family to Oglethorpe County, Georgia. "Brother Isaac & Sister Lucy" became members of Antioch Baptist Church in Stephen, Georgia, soon after it was organized. Isaac was excommunicated for the "sin of drunkeness". He later moved his family to Perry County, Alabama, where he made his first land purchase in 1821. Isaac & Lucy were part of a group of several families that left Antioch Baptist Church in about 1820 & settled in Perry County, Alabama.

At the age of 74, he enrolled for his pension on October 29, 1833 in Perry County, Alabama. At that time, he was a widower, and residing with his son, Isaac Oakes, Jr.
