Biography

MILLIGAN , KATHRYN RUTH OAKES NN 504576 RR, Kings, Ill.

My parents were George Hunter Oakes (b. November 27, 1870, d. May 6, 1946, Kings) and Harriet Ellen Campbell (b. February 28, 1871, Holcomb, Ill. - December 12, 1954, Kings).

My maternal grandparents were Elizabeth Sechler Campbell (b. October 23, 1829, Lycoming Cty., PA) and Martin Campbell (b. July 31, 1828, Toronto, Can. - d. October 11, 1904, Holcomb, Ill.). They were married December 20, 1855. My paternal grandparents were William McDermott Oakes (b. September 11, 1833, Lycoming Cty., PA - d. August 17, 1899, Holcomb, Ill. and Ann Foresman Oakes (b. February 21, 1837, Circleville, Ohio - d. September 21, 1924, Oregon, Ill.). They were married March 10, 1859.

I was born June 6, 1900, at Kings, Ill., at the home of my parents. I attended school in Kings and graduated from Rockford High School in 1919. I married Harry Gale Milligan (b. March 22, 1895, Chana, Ill.) in Belvidere, Ill., on March 8, 1922, by Rev. A. O. Hjerpe. We have one son, Robert James Milligan (b. January 8, 1923, Kings) who married Ann Miller (b. 1928) in Kings in 1949. They have 4 children: Jacque Kay (1950) a graduate of Univ. of Oklahoma in 1973 with a degree in Physical Therapy; Martha Ann (1952) a graduate of Univ. of Wyoming in 1974; James Russell (1953) a graduate of the Univ. of Ill. in 1975; Malcolm William (1954) now attending the Univ. of Ill.

I taught school in Kings, Ill., for 2 years and have been a housewife for 53 years. Harry farmed in the Kings area until he retired. We are members of the Kings Presbyterian Church and active in their affairs. I am a member of the Ill. Retired Teachers Assoc. I became interested in DAR through my mother's maiden sister who was a member in a Chicago Chapter. I have served as Regent, Chaplain in State Officers Club, Ddirector and Conservation Chm. I went to Continental Congress in 1967.

I joined NSDAR on October 12, 1964, through Michael Sechler (b. 1762, Lycoming Ctu., PA). His wife was Rebecca Lowe or Love (b. 1779-80 in Lycoming). Michael was a body guard of George Washington. In 1945 a cousin visited his grave i PA and found they were still guarding Mr. Sechler's grave. Other ancestors of the War I have found since joining are: Robert Foreman, my grandmother's ancestor, who had 6 sons serving and one son, Robert Foresman, jr.'s father-in-law Henry Jacoby, also served.
