Source: GENEALOGICAL NOTES Of Interest To DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT AND MARY BLACK PRICE [2]
The data in the sketch (included in the source) and many other items, are found in a lengthy article about the Oakley family, written presumably by Harriet Bartine (granddaughter of David Oakley and Sara Hunt) and published (in the early 1900s) in a newspaper, its name not known. In March, 1922, this article was sent by Anna Black to her niece, Mrs. J.W. Cobb who sent it to (the author of the source (Beverly Price Carter) in October, 1953.
The gist of this source reads as follows: "Miles Oakley IV, believed to be the first of the name in America, was born in Oakley Grove, Oakley Parish, England. The date of his birth is given in family records as _UNK_ 15, 1623, but on his tombstone in Westchester, New York, as July 15, 1615. The inscription ends with 'in 1675, (he) became its (West Chester Town) first mayor.' . . . His first three wives left no sons, but his fourth wife, Mary Wilmot, whom he married in New York in 1669, had three sons, the youngest also named Miles. The others were William and Joseph and the three brothers married three sisters, named Hunt, as shown in the chart."
At this point, the author has begun to conflate the men named Miles Oakley. In fact, the youngest son, Miles Oakley (V) had a son named "Miles Oakley (VI)", who married (probably a Miss Gilbert)" (now known to be Mercy Gardner and their sons were David, William and Joseph, who married respectively, sisters Sarah Hunt of Yonkers, Eunice Hunt who lived in Peekskill and Phebe Hunt of White Plains. "Miles Oakley (VI)" and Miss Gardner also had daughters Abbe and Jemima.
