FENTRESS COUNTY, TENNESSEE - In 1850, George, Martha, and baby Sarah lived in Fentress County, Tennessee. They lived near the John Oakes and William Oakes households, the Wrights also lived in Fentress County. The Oakes, Wrights, and Nichols and others moved to Benton County, Arkansas together. The notebook of George and Martha's son (published in Benton County Historical Journal) was written in New London, Tennessee. The William Oakes and Walter Nichols families came to Benton County, Arkansas by wagon train in 1854 with several other families (some sources say six, some say seven -- including Wrights, Misers, Buttrams, Oakes, Shorts, Blevins). The story of the wagon train journey was passed down in many other family histories.
BENTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS - Wash and Martha and family were pioneer settlers in Benton County, Arkansas. In 1860 George, Martha and family were listed on the census in Benton County, Arkansas, Bentonville Post Office.
WIDOWED: Martha lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary J. and Moses Sutton, after the death of her husband. The 1900 U. S. Census showed her residing in their household in Benton County, Arkansas.

DEATH: Martha moved to Kansas with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Moses Sutton, and died and was buried in Harmony Cemetery in Cherryvale, Kansas.
Death Notice from newspaper: Death of Mrs. Nichols - Mrs. Martha A. Nichols died at her home 5 miles SW of Cherryvale Saturday. Deceased moved with her children to Montgomery County three years ago from Arkansas. When 17 years of age she joined the Methodist church and has ever since lived a consistent christian life. She leaves seven children to mourn her death. Her neighbors knew her as a kindly christian woman who made the world better because of her life. Martha A. Oaks was born in Tennessee in 1831. At the age of 17 years she was united in marriage to George Nichols whose death preceded hers nine years. Eleven children, seven of whom survive their mother, were born to this union. Shortly after marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Nichols moved to Arkansas where the latter lived until three years ago when she moved to Montgomery county.
METHODIST - She joined the Methodist Church at seventeen and married at seventeen. These events are probably related. It is known that other early day Nichols were Methodist.
RESEARCH NOTE: PHOTO OF MARTHA OAKES NICHOLS - There is a nice photo of Martha as an older woman, seated in a wicker chair. Contacts have said that this photo of Martha is in a book of Benton County Pioneers.
