Joseph Oates was born on 11 August 1743 at Low Hall, Potternewton, Leeds [1][2] and baptised at Mill Hill Chapel on 1 September 1743. [3] He was the oldest of ten children of George Oates and Sarah (Jolley) Oates.
Joseph married Elizabeth Rayner of Leeds at St Peter's Church Leeds on 27 March 1777. [4] They had 6 children :
