Biography

Thomas Oates was born to John Oates and was baptized 6 Mar 1789 in Onchan, Isle of Man.

Thomas married Elizabeth Kelly in Braddan Parish Church, Isle of Man, on 8 Apr 1817. The marriage record indicates that both resided in Braddan. Witnesses included William Kelly and William Corran.

Their daughter Mary was baptized on 23 Feb 1817. It's unclear why the birth and baptism appear to have occurred before their marriage, yet there was no note of the child being illegitimate.

Thomas died and was buried 6 Jun 1841 in Onchan, the same date as the 1841 census. His surviving household is shown as living at Ballacreech, the same farm as his brother John Oates, who inherited the farm from their father John Oates. The household in the 1841 census was:

• William Oates, 15, paper maker
• Eleanor Oates, 12

In his will, Thomas' father John Oates gave him his "wearing apparel", and also gave him three pounds Manx, but directed that the money be given to Thomas' family rather than delivered directly into his hands. Might Thomas have had a problem with overspending money, perhaps alcoholism?
