Biography

Helen was more commonly known as Ellen. She was born about 1820.

Marriage (de facto?) about 1847 to Robert Clarke. Robert died in 1861. Ellen applied in 1862 to transfer the publican's license of the "Cottage of Content" at Gundaroo from her husband's name, Robert Clarke into her name.[1]

Marriage: Ellen married William Cresswell on 6 April 1863 at Gundaroo, New South Wales, Australia.[2] He had previously been using the alias Smith.

In May 1863, transfer of the "Cottage of Content" publican licence from Ellen Clarke into her new husband's name William Cresswell.[3]

However a separation notice was published in November 1863: Ellen obtained a legal separation from William Cresswell on the grounds of cruelty.[4]

Her husband William Cresswell was admitted about 1871 to the Hospital for the Insane, Gladesville, New South Wales. Later he was transferred to the Parramatta Lunatic Asylum. It was claimed he was Arthur Orton, the "Tichborne Claimant" and even Roger Tichborne himself, resulting in newspaper reports, investigations by the police, a court case and even a Royal Commission in 1898. William Cresswell died on 13 December 1904 at Parramatta Lunatic Asylum.

It is unknown what happened to Ellen.
