MR. JAMES OATES-79 YEARS.
A fine old Cornish gentleman and a true son of "the Duchy" passed away on Saturday morning in the person of Mr. James Oates, at his residence at Minnamurra, after a short illness.
Born at Sennen Cove, or to use its old name, St. Sennen, the little fishing village which nestles under the shadow of Land's End, Mr. Oates came.to Australia nearly sixty years ago, bringing with him the traditional love of the sea and fishing, and after many years spent in other occupations, he had nearly two decades to spare at the end of his life in which to live in surroundings that in many respects are so similar to those of his birthplace.
For a time he drove one of the old-fashioned hansom cabs in Waverley, after which he entered the services of the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Board, and remained at that work for forty years. He was a familiar figure in Waverley and made a host of friends there who will mourn the passing of such a fine old man.
Sixteen years ago, the late Mr. Oates came to Minnamurra, taking up the first allotment when the Charles Estate was subdivided. Here he built a store and also hired boats and placed his expert knowledge of fishing at the disposal of the many visitors who came to the settlement. It is largely due to the efforts of Mr. Oates that the tiny place has now grown to such popularity as a tourist resort. His innate courtesy and cheery disposition endeared him to all with whom he came in contact, and to many of those who spent happy holidays at Minnamurra, their meeting with Mr. Jim Oates was among their happiest recollections. Minnamurra is poorer indeed for his passing, and his place is
almost impossible to fill.
The late Mr. Oates married twice, his first wife, Miss Rose Robbins. By his first marriage he had a large family, of whom there are surviving three sons, Messrs. John (Waverley), Henry (Lakemba) and James Oates (Hurstville) and four daughters, Mabel (Mrs. McMah, Waverley), Emily (Mrs. Woof, Auburn), Violet (Mrs. Howell, Newcastle) and Lena (Mrs. Perrett, Richmond). His second wife, who was Miss Elizabeth Wallace, devotedly nursed her husband during his last illness, and she, together with his granddaughter, Miss Ruth Woof, assisted the late Mr. Oates in the conduct of the store at Minnamurra, and to them and all members of the family, sincere sympathy is extended.
The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian cemetery, Kiama, the Rev. G. M. Torbett officiating.
The following floral tributes were received: His loving wife, Topsy, Jim and family - Walter and Lil-Rose and Jim - Aunt Minnie and family-Violet, Olive and Jack - Phyllis, Betty, Teg. and Herb - Dick and Edith--Mabel, George and family - Mr. and Mrs. T.
