Biography

Sarah Odell, the daughter of Thomas Odell and Margaret Beall, was born in about 1720 in Prince George's County, Maryland. She was later married in Maryland to a man named Jacob Duckett. Jacob, who had been born on 11 November 1714 in Prince George's County, was the son of Richard Duckett and Charity Jacob.

Jacob died in Frederick County, Maryland in 1764. His will, which had been written on 24 April 1764, was later submitted for probate before the Frederick County Court on 23 June 1764. After Jacob passed away, Sarah moved with her son, Jacob, Jr., to the Ninety-Six District of South Carolina, where she appears to have resided until her death. Sarah and Jacob, Jr. had two plantations, one containing approximately 140 acres, and another containing approximately 150 acres, surveyed for them in the original Berkeley County of South Carolina on 11 June 1769 and 10 August 1770, respectively. From SC Archives.

Notes

From Doliante, p. 584:

(II.) Sarah Odell, possibly b. C1718-25, Pr. Geo's Co., Md. & named for both her grandmothers; m. C1743, same, Jacob Duckett, son of Richard & Charity (Jacob) Duckett. He was b. Nov. 11, 1714, Pr. Geo's Co.; d. 1764, Fred. Co., Md. She d. in S.C., aft. 1774... Their descendants will be found under the Duckett family.

Doliante also notes the following tombstone inscription from the private Duckett Cemetery, "off Jalapa Road, abt. 7 miles southeast of Whitmire, S.C. (Newberry Co.)":

: "Here lies/The Body of Sarah/ Odell Who Died/ April 16, 1815/AGED 94 YEARS".

She states that she is convinced the stone belongs to this Sarah, noting that she is unable to identify a single Sarah, or a Sarah who married Odell, and was born this early, whom it otherwise might be. She speculates that the Duckett name was not used since it is the Duckett cemetery, and it may have been taken for granted that she had married into the family. This grave now appears on Find a Grave, where it is also speculated that it may be her burial place. The age and death date shown would place her birth in 1720 or early 1721.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

Odell-878 and Odell-131 appear to represent the same person because:

There is very little information on Odell-878, but enough that I believe these two represent the same person. Her exact birth date is not known, but 1720-1721 is our best current estimate. The exact death date on Odell-131 is somewhat speculative (see notes on that profile), and "after 1770" on Odell-878 still fits.
