Biography

His parents are unknown. He has been detached from William Oldham due to lack of evidence.

"William ODEN was first mentioned in “A List of Sea Men’s Names which Capt. John HOPSON one of his Maties Councell in VA desireth to be exempted from ye presse in Regarde of his Present intended Voyage of VA in ye good shipp call ye Vnity of ye Isle of Wyghte” (Isle of Wight) in Passengers to America by TEPPER, page 55. The heading states: “(The following list is from a paper without date; The Capt. HOPSON mentioned in it is the Capt. HOBSON [sic] of the New England Histories, probably).” Therefore, we do not know the date of William ODEN’s sailing or arrival in America, only that he sailed from England.

"Abstracts of VA Land Patents & Grants 1623-66 by NUGENT, page 445, lists the grant of 300 acres of land to Richard JONES in Lower Norfolk Co., VA for the transportation to this country of six persons including William’s children: “Wm ODION, the younger” and “Ellen ODION” on 28 Apr. 1665 (Patent Book 5). Son Richard ODEON and Mary WILLIAMS were listed on Thomas WILSON’s transportation list of the same date. Apparently, the wife of William had died in England. [1]

William married Elizabeth Vestes in 1644 in Stepney, Middlesex, England. [2]

He had been detached from Nancy Low as wife due to lack of evidence.

William ODEON’s will was proved 16 Feb. 1662 in Norfolk Co., VA. He lists two sons, William and Richard (“under 17 years of age”), and a daughter Ellen. Apparently the older son William stayed in VA, and Richard’s land was surveyed in NC. At this point, I know nothing further about Ellen.

Will of William ODEON, dated 25 January 1662, proven 16 February 1662:

.....Sonne William ODEON
.....Daughter Ellen ODEON
.....Sonne Richard ODEON under seventeen yeres
.....Elizabeth MANNING's child
.....My Servant, Elizabeth MANNING, given her tyme in servitude
.....My Lovinge friend ffrancis SAYER to be my overseer
Signed: William ODEON {seal}. Witnesses: Richard CHURCH, Abraham ELLIOTT

What is source for his marriage to Nancy Low? There is marriage record of William Odeon and Elizabeth Vestes on 1 Apr 1644 in Stepney, Middlesex, England as well as baptisms of their children. I propose to disconnect Nancy and add Elizabeth. Objections or discussion?

His last name wasn't Odom, and the Odom family that was in Chowan, NC is not the same family. This William was Odeon. Baptism and marriage records in England confirm this. His sons William and Richard went to Beaufort, NC. Their name was spelled Odeon and Odeon on records. Their wills are on file in Beaufort. Need to disconnect the children.

Hi Darlene, I am a direct descendant of Richard Odium / Odum of Chowan, NC and have confirmed your point through y-dna testing that we are not related to William Odeon. Our haplogroup is I-M253 / I-Z138 while William Oden/Odeon's haplogroup was R1b.

Great information, David. Thanks for letting us know.
Did the Odem yDNA match the other descendants of Oldham? Need to find proof for his parents.

Please provide source for him being the son of William "Oldham". Records show this William with a last name of ODEON.
