Biography

James was said to have arrived in Marlboro County, SC with his brother Sion from Virginia, according A History of Marlboro County.[1] James is enumerated with his wife in the 1790 census in Cheraws District, South Carolina[2] In 1800, he is enumerated in Marlboro County (aged 26-45) with his wife (aged 26-45), and 8 young children, 4 boys under 10 and 4 girls, 3 under 10 and one 10-16. From this record, if these are his children, we can deduce that his eldest child was a girl.[3] In 1810, he was enumerated in Marlboro County (aged 26-45) with his wife (over 45), 6 boys (2 under 10, 3 10-15, 1 16-26) and 5 girls (4 under 10, 1 10-15).[4] From this last record, we can deduce his birth to be after 1766 but not later than 1774. We cannot place his birth at 1751 as this profile has previously done. It should also be noted that his mother, Honor, was born around 1755. It makes sense that he moved to Marlboro County as a young man and married there. Since his two known siblings were born around 1777, it would make sense to approximate his age at the latest date, ie 1774. We can also deduce from this record that the eldest daughter has probably been married by 1810 and has moved away. James died around 1815 and his estate was probated in Marlboro County.[5]

James is named as an heir in Richard Odom's will.[6] He is listed as the son of Honour Odom. He had two full siblings who were also listed in that will. Recent y-dna discoveries show that both Sion and James share the same markers as Richard's male descendants from David.

Research Notes

  • This James Odom appears in many genealogies and family trees, but does not appear to exist in records. If anyone has records to support his existence, it would help understand his genealogy better. He is clearly not the same person as James from Marlboro County.
  • It should be noted that at this time, middle names were very rare, especially in men. Often they would be named after founding fathers (post 1776) or religious leaders such as John Wesley. Women would sometime acquire an additional name of a saint, but rarely in protestant families.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Odom-46 and Odom-2549 appear to represent the same person because: The father is incorrect and the dates don't match. Odom-46 is the person this profile is supposed to be. Someone matched Odom-46 as the father of his brother. It needs to be fixed. William Odom was a brother to James not his son. James was only 3 when William was born. Abraham was neither of them's father. He may have been an uncle, but not their father.

Odom-1988 and Odom-2549 do not represent the same person because: his parental line is not clear right now.

Odom-2549 and Odom-640 appear to represent the same person because: these are either duplicates, or one of them is attached to the wrong father. Please determine and either merge or detach the father.
