Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Richard Odom Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

He was NOT the son of William Odeon d: 1662 whose sons moved to Beaufort, North Carolina where their surname was spelled as Odeon or Oden.

In 1665 Richard Odom emigrated to Virginia. [1]

Richard Odom married an Anne of uncertain married surname. [2]

The 1704 tax list in Nansemond County, Virginia included Richard Odom.

By 1713 he had moved his family from Nansemond County, Virginia to Chowan County, North Carolina where he appeared in court records on 07 Apr 1713 and 30 Jul 1725. [3] [4]

He acquired several tracts of land, including 200 acres on the River Pocosin.

In 1725 Richard Odom owned land next to those sold by William Hughes to Joseph Vann in Gates County. [5]

Richard Odom named his wife and known children in his last Will on 12 Aug 1727 and it was proved on 12 Jan 1727/28 in Chowan County, North Carolina [6] [7] Family mentioned included:

wife: Anne
sons: Richard, John, Abraham, Jacob and Aron (to each is given a plantation)
daughters: Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth and Jane
granddaughter Ann Vann (note: one of his daughters evidently married Edward Vann)
executors: sons Richard and Abraham Odum
witnesses: Edward Warren, Edward Vann, James Brady and Richard Taylor. [8]

His son Abraham was devised land on Cutawitsky Creek, a tributary of the Meherrin River, [9] and Abraham sold this land to Walter Brown on 14 May 1735. [10] and relocated to land on Beech Creek and Swift Creek of the Tar River. The creeks are located northwest of present-day Tarboro, North Carolina and became part of Edgecombe County.

Various published resources for this area of North Carolina contain numerous records on the sons of this Richard.

He passed away in 1727.

Richard's will passed probate on 24 January 1728 in Chowan County, North Carolina.[11]

Excerpt of Will: Sons: Richard and John, Abraham, Jacob and Aron (to each is given a plantation). Daughters: Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth and Jane Odum. Wife: Anne. Odom-3243 and Odom-6 appear to represent the same person because: While participating in Connect-a-Thon found that there were duplicate profiles for Richard Odom died 1727 and his sons.

How do we know Richard is the son of James (Odium) Goldingham? There are zero sources to link these together and very unlikely since there is a brother listed with the name Richard Odium. Parents wouldn't name both their children Richard and confused as to how one son would take on the surname of Odom and the other Odium when it appears the father's surname was once Odium but he changed it to Goldingham. I'd suggest unlinking the father of this profile until we can get more evidence as to where this Richard belongs unless someone has some source evidence to assign a father to Richard.

Christopher, if you have evidence, you should start a G2G post to discuss. I also sent you a PM. Thanks.
Can one of the profile managers for Richard Sr. contact me please? I may have reasonable proof that William Odom (Odeon) was indeed the father of this Richard Odom. I can send you an image privately.
