Biography

Research Notes

According to her Find A Grave memorial Elizabeth Ogden, the wife of Robert Johnston (1734-1823), was born in 1750 and died 27 September 1832 in Mahopac Falls, Putnam County, New York. Her Find A Grave memorial does not include a photo of a headstone or give any information about her parents.[1]

The Ogden Family in America genealogy, on page 64[2] and page 94[3] includes Elizabeth Ogden, a daughter Uzal Ogden and Elizabeth Thebaut, with no birth or death date, who married a Robert Johnston. She is listed on page 64, after her brothers Lewis (born 1730), Gabriel, and John (neither with a birth date), and before Moses (born 1736), and three additional siblings, Mary (no birth date), Uzal Jr (born 1744), and Charles (born 1748). It can be inferred that the writer assumed that she was probably born between 1730 and 1736, and unlikely to have been born after 1748. It should also be noted that the Ogden genealogy provides no sources, and that the author himself stated on page vii, "The editors do not assume that no errors are discoverable in this work. A number of conflicting statements sent by different correspondents, and a disagreement of old records, were often puzzling to the editors; but great care was exercised in settling upon what seemed to them the most authentic and trustworthy."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

Ogden-5797 and Ogden-1102 appear to represent the same person because: Please agree to merge these duplicate profiles. Thanks!

20 yr difference between the two and not enough info to consider it’s the Sam person. Names were commonly the same throughout families.
Thanks for your comment, Melona. I think you're correct that it is likely there is more than one marriage of an Elizabeth Ogden and a Robert Johnston. I looked at the sources of information for this profile, and entered what I found in a Research Notes section. From what I can see, it looks to me like the Robert Johnston mentioned in the "Ogden Family in America" genealogy is unlikely to be the same man as the Robert Johnston in Find A Grave memorial #159825644. The two daughters mentioned on page 94 of the Ogden genealogy aren't listed on the Find A Grave memorial, and seem to be part of a different family.

My suggestion: Remove Robert Johnston (abt.1735-1823) as her spouse, and as the father of her two children, Margaret (Johnston) Van Arsdale (1782-1848), and Charlotte (Johnston) Niven (abt.1785-). The daughter Ann McArthur Johnston (1785-1864) appears to me to belong to the other Elizabeth Ogden, so her mother should be changed to Elizabeth (Ogden) Johnston (1736-1818). Let me know if you agree, and if you would like to make those changes, or prefer that I make the changes.

Go ahead and make the changes.
Ogden-5797 and Ogden-1102 do not represent the same person because: Even though each was married to a Robert Johnston, they appear to be two different women.
