James (Ogilvy) Ogilvy Ist Lord Ogilvy of Airlie is a member of Clan Ogilvy.

James (Ogilvy) Ogilvy Ist Lord Ogilvy of Airlie was born in Scotland.

James was born about 1435 possibly at Bolshan in the parish of Kinnell near Arbroath eldest son to Sir John Ogilvy of Lintrathen and his spouse Margaret Seton Lady Ogilvy, Countess of Moray.

At Bruges , Belgium on 6 Mar 1450/51 Sir John Ogilvy alomg with Sir Colin Campbell and Karolo de Moravia, Patrick Annand and George Lauder esquires witnessed a Letter of Reversion by William Lauder of Hatton in favour of Andrew, Lord Gray.[1]

Lord Ogilvy was sometimes designed Sir James Ogilvy of Tullycurran. At Arbroath on 27 Jan 1465/66 Sir John O of Lintrathen with consent of Sir james Ogilvy of Tullycurran his apparent heir granted a charter to David Ogilvy his son of an annual rent of 20 merks Socts furth of Wardropperston.[2]


On 24 Feb 1493/4, John Gardin of Borrowfield granted a charter to James, Lord Ogilvy of Airlie, of the lands of Kinnell and mills. [3]

Douglas says that he married firstly, Elizabeth Kennedy. It is assumed that she was of the Cassillis family in Ayrshire but proof is wanting. By his first marriage Sir James Ogilvy and his wife had issue:

  1. John his heir
  2. Thomas This Sir Thomas left four daughters
  3. Margaret mar. Sir Gilbert Ramsay of Bamff
  4. Archibald had remission for murder of James son of David Lindsay

Sir James Ogilvy married secondly Helen Douglas, Lady Graham daughter to the deceased William, earl of Angus and relict of William Graham of Kincardine and Montrose. Sir James and Helen Douglas had issue:

  1. Oliver mar. Felicia Fenton of Cookston
  2. Alexander marr. Nicholas Stratoun
  3. Isabel mar. James Stewart, Earl of Buchan and Auchterhouse
  4. Malcolm mar.Margaret Ouchterlony
  5. John in Craig of Glenisla and of Hallyards of Bandoch married Helen Cosour.[4]

Helen, Lady Graham died about 1490.

Sir James married thirdly to Janet Lyle, Sir James Ogilvy and Janet Lyle had issue:

  1. Janet contracted to marry marry Alexander son and heir of George Gordon ygr of Midmar
  2. Marion mistress of Cardinal David Beaton and mother to all his children


On 12 April 1483, Sasine was granted in favour of Sir John Ogilvy of the lands of barony of Lintrathen, following on precept under Quarter Seal. [5] Just prior to this a complaint was raised at the Parliament in Edinburgh regarding a dispute which had arisen between Sir James and his neighbour Alexander Lord Glamis over cattle raiding particularly at Kinalty.[6]] Later that same year Sir John gained the superiority of Conveth and Auchengray in a successful action brought against Margaret Ogilvy Countess of Buchan.[7]

In 1484 James was elected tomembership of the Committee lords auditors of causes and complaints.[8]

King James IV with the advice of the estates of parliament, on 28 Apr 1491 created and styled Sir James Ogilvy of Airlie, knight, in barony and banrent and lord of his parliament, and James and his heirs to be called and styled Lord Ogilvy of Airlie in all time to come, with all prerogatives and privileges etc. [9] In the same year Sir James of Airlie was Ambassador to Denmark.
