Biography

This profile is part of the Ogle Name Study.

Samuel Ogle[1][2] (b. 1658; bp. 25 Mar 1659 - d. 1718/9),[3] of Bowsden, Northumberland & Dublin, Ireland[3] & South Dissington, co. Northumb.[3][4][5] (d. 10 Mar 1719 Ireland).[1][2]

He was the second but first surviving son of Rev. Luke Ogle of Berwick & Bowsden, Northumberland.[2] His maternal heritage is uncertain, but his mother was either:

Ogle, (1902), indicates that Samuel's mother is Katherine Graham, and associates Luke's second marriage with banns that are dated before Samuel was born and after Katherine died.

Marriage

He married twice to:

  1. Mrs. Elizabeth Dawson of Newcastle (d. c.1697), wid. of Thomas Dawson of Newcastle, co. Northumb.
  2. (04 Oct 1701) Ursula, dau. of Sir Robert Markham of Sedgewick, co. Lincs. & Mary, dau. of Sir Thomas Widdrington; wid. of Altham Annesley, Baron Altham.[1]

His first wife had a daughter, Mary (b. bef. 1697).

Markham of Sedgewick

Ursula Markham had six children with Samuel.[1] She is the mother of:

  • Luke of Newcastle (will 13 Jun 1719, proved 11 Dec 1735).[7]
  • Samuel II, provincial gov. of Maryland.
  • George (1704 - 46).
  • Robert (bp. 1706).
  • Thomas (bp. 1713).

connections

© Bree Ogle 21 Jul 2019 WikTree.com -- The Markhams of Sedgewick, co. Lincs. probably had connections to the Ogles of Pinchbeck during the 1500s. This is important because prior to Samuel and Ursula's marriage, evidence is slim when it comes to tying in Sir Robert Ogle of Ogle (living 1483), patriarch of the Ogles of Pinchbeck, to the Medieval line of the Ogles in co. Northumberland, England.

Sir John Markham of Sedgewick, co. Lincs. (d. c. 09 Feb 1593/4), had three wives. Two of them allied him to the Welbys of Pinchbeck and the family of Cassandra ferch William of Washingleys (aka Cassandra ap Rhys / Apreece, etc).

Cassandra also married three times. It was through her second marriage to Adlard Welby of Gedney/Goxhill (d. 1571 Gedney, co. Lincs), that her family had connections to the Ogles of Pinchbeck.

Adlard Welby was also previously married. He and his first wife Ellen Hall are the parents of Jane Welby (d. 1574), wife of Thomas Ogle of Pinchbeck (1526 - 1574), son of:

Richard Ogle of Pinchbeck (d. 1555), is the grandson of Sir Robert, founder of the Ogles of Pinchbeck.

The last wife of Sir John Markham of Sedgewick was Jane, Dame Skipwith (d. 1630). She was the eldest daughter (and maybe child) of Cassandra of Washingleys. Adlard Welby was her step-father.

Dame Skipwith buried three husbands:

  1. John Walpole of Whaplode, co. Lincs (dsp. 1590);
  2. Sir John Markham;
  3. and finally ... Sir William Skipwith of Cotes, co. Leics. (d. 1610).

Her last husband Sir William Skipwith and his first wife Margaret Cave, have American descendants. They're the grandparents of Sir Grey Skipwith, 3Bt., who died in Virginia.

The Ogles of Pinchbeck also had connections to the Walpoles, through the marriage of Jane Ogle (d. 1630) to Dymoke Walpole of Pinchbeck & Spalding, co. Lincs. (1584 - 1624). ... Jane was his first wife. Her parents were:

  • Thomas Ogle II of Pinchbeck (1561 - 1618), son of Thos. Ogle of Pinchbeck (1526 - 1774) & Jane Welby (d. 1574).
  • and Anne Bryan (d. 1598), dau. of William Bryan of Bolingbroke, co. Lincs.

As such, Jane Ogle was also a grandaughter of Adlard Welby and Ellen Hall. She was also the mother of the "mariner and man of war," Thomas Walpole of Dunston (b. c. 1627; living 1664), who married Anne Porter of St. Andrew's in Holburn (b. c. 1633).

Occupation

  • Recorder for Berwick
  • Member of Parliament.[4][2]
  • Irish Revenue Commissioner[2]
  • Commissioner for Colony of Maryland.[1]
  • Aft Feb 1697: Samuel was teller in favor of referring to committee a petition from the Royal African Company (11 Mar).[2][8]

Will

  • Date: 04 Mar 1719 Dublin, Ireland.[2]
