Biography

Princess Maria of Greece and Denmark (Greek: Πριγκίπισσα Μαρία της Ελλάδας και Δανίας) was the fifth child and second daughter of King George I of Greece and Olga Constantinovna of Russia.

European and Russian royalty. Born Maria Georgievna zu Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Princess of Greece and Denmark, she was the daughter of George I, King of Greece and the Hellenes, and Olga Constantinovna Romanov, Grand Duchess of Russia. She succeeded to the title of Grand Duchess of Russia by her first marriage to George Michailovitch Romanov, Grand Duke of Russia. She later married Pericles Joannides (Perikles Loannidis) and was styled Her Imperial Highness, Grand Duchess Maria Georgievna of Russia, Mrs. Perikles Ioannidis.

She married Grand-Duke George Mikhailovich of Russia, a maternal cousin, in Corfu on 30 April 1900. the couple had two daughters:

  1. Nina Georgievna (20 June 1901-27 February 1974), who married Paul Chavchavadze;
  2. Xenia Georgievna (9 August 1903-17 September 1965), who married first William Bateman Leeds (son of Nancy May Stewart Worthington Leeds and stepson of Prince Christopher of Greece) and second, Herman Jud.

Maria soon began to spend most of her time abroad, and was in London when the First World War broke out. Her daughters soon joined her; they would spend the rest of their lives in exile. On 28 January 1919, Maria's husband Grand-Duke George Mikhalovich was shot by the Bolsheviks.

On 16 December 1922, Maria was remarried to Admiral Pericles Ioannides in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Maria died in her native Athens on 14 December 1940, at the age of 64. She was buried in the Royal Cemetery of the Tatoi Palace.[1]
