Biography

This person was created through the import of LaBach Family TreeApril28_2011.ged on 05 May 2011. The following data was included in the gedcom. You may wish to edit it for readability.

James was born in 1742. He passed away in 1829.

This James should NOT be confused with the one who married Leah Stephens:

James Oldham (m. Leah Stephens) died in Fayette or Union Co., IN, the parent of Stephen Oldham) is different than the James (died in Hopkins Co., Kentucky) who married Diadamah (Todd) Merritt widow of Levi Merritt. The first wife of this second James is not known. Both James Oldhams were born in Virginia. Merging these two is a common mistake. The James that married Leah Stephens was born in Fairfax (later Loudoun Co., VA) and the James that had, as his second marriage, Diadamah was born in Fauquier Co., VA (said to be the son of Richard Oldham and Elizabeth Bayse).

The migration path of the James who married Leah is Loudoun --> Frederick --> Henry, VA --> ? --> Sevier Co., TN --> Jennings twp., Fayette Co. IN, all documented. This James (m. Leah) was probably the son of the James Oldham (d. 1752) in the part of Fairfax Co., VA that became Shelburne Parish, Loudoun County. His wife's name is not known. James (m. Leah) shows up in the Loudoun Co. records as soon as he comes of age in Loudoun Co., VA as a tithe on the farm of John Smarr in 1767, indicating he has turned 16 (b. 1751 or so.) His brother George is a tithe on the same Smarr's land a couple of years earlier. John Smarr was a neighbor of the James who died in Loudoun in 1752 (Oldham witnessed Smarr's land transactions in Shelburne Parish before 1752.) In 1774 in Shelburne Parish, Loudoun Co., VA he married Leah Stephens. James (m. Leah) bought land in 1776 on the banks of the Shenandoah in Frederick County. James left a will in 1827 in Fayette Co., IN and names wife Leah, sons Stephen, Moses, George, William, John, James and daughters Nancy Sewal, Sarah Longley and Mary Adams.

The migration path of the other James is Fauquier VA --> Caswell Co., NC --> Pendleton Dist., SC (now Anderson Co., SC) --> Hopkins Co., KY. He left a will, March 1826, in Hopkins Co., KY and names wife Damy and sons of first wife: George, James, William, John, Preston, Tapley and Elias; also the three sons by Diadamah ("Damy"): Esquire, Reuben and Jesse.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Oldham-2654 and Oldham-244 appear to represent the same person because: these two profiles represent the same person

Hi - I can't tell for sure that these are the same person. The profile for Oldham 2654 is fairly sparse. I see that some people have added the multiple marriages, but another comment by a person on this comment page seems to indicate that is a common mistake. It seems equally as likely that the additional marriage on this profile is inaccurate.

There were two James Oldham's, both of Virginia.

This James Oldham who died in Hopkins Co Kentucky had two wives, first one unknown and live in Pendelton District, SC and then moved to Morton's Gap Kentucky and married Didamy Merritt nee Todd, widow of Levi Merritt.

The other James Oldham was married to Leah Stephens.

Oldham-1680 and Oldham-244 appear to represent the same person because: Same father, same siblings, years born very close, died same year, married to the same woman. These are probably the same person.
